Following your dentist’s orders while the post-operative care is going on is essential. The doctor will prescribe you antibiotics after successful insertion of the dental implants.

The dentist will tell you to bite on a gauze pad, in a firm yet gentle manner, to end the bleeding. They will hand you a pack of gauze, which you can take home, to place on the site of surgery. Always change the pads while using them until the bleeding comes to a standstill. Doctors also recommend people to bite a moist tea packet. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, you must contact your doctor.

For any discomfort post-surgery, you will be prescribed a painkiller. You can also keep an ice pack on the swollen area for as long as twenty minutes. The duration for applying ice pack depends on the swelling so ask your doctor about it. Two days after surgery, apply some heat (for example, using a tea bag) to the site.

For the first 24-48 hours post-surgery, keep your head elevated to reduce the bleeding and swelling. Take ample rest and don’t do any vigorous activities for at least three days after the implant surgery.

Drink a minimum of eight glasses of juice or water and consume only soft foods (soup, yogurt, etc.) during the initial days of surgery. Rinse your mouth 3-4 times a day using a warm solution of salt and water, just one teaspoon salt in a cup of water. Spit cautiously to prevent any complications.

There can be little discomfort after your jaw bone grows near the titanium posts, and this may last for some weeks. Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to decrease the pain. If you face any problem or have any doubt, contact your dentist’s office.
